The 2010 First-time Principals Programme is a nation-wide, eighteen month induction programme for new principals. The programme is designed to meet the needs of participating principals from all regions, sectors and types of schools. The objective of the programme is to develop the knowledge, skills and capabilities of first-time principals to support their successful school leadership.
The programme commenced in 2002 and over half of New Zealand principals have since participated in the programme. The programme is a partnership project initiated and funded by the Ministry of Education, designed and delivered by Centre for Educational Leadership First-time Principals Programme Project Team at the University of Auckland. The Project Team includes both senior academics and people with outstanding school leadership experience.
New millennium principals experience and are expected to lead and manage multiple and complex responsibilities. They must continue to improve the quality of teaching and learning in their schools in an environment in which change is constant. Recent evidence shows that the improvements in schools which have the most long lasting and positive impact are led by principals who are committed to continuously learning about their effectiveness as leaders. The First-time Principals Programme promotes this effective educational leadership and is informed by the principal’s own learning needs in their school context.
The induction programme is designed to meet the individual needs of first-time principals. It seeks to develop the professional and personal skills and capabilities of new school leaders, so that they can work effectively with their colleagues and communities to further improve teaching and learning in New Zealand’s schools. |
