The purpose of this self-assessment tool is to identify your strengths and current development needs in the leadership of teaching and learning.
This self-assessment will provide critical information for the professional goal-setting that you will do during your mentor’s first visit. Please complete BOTH parts 1 & 2 BEFORE you Mentor's first visit.
A record of your responses will be sent to our researcher and the collated information will assist us in the further development of the First-time Principals Programme Programme.
The ELP survey uses 8 scales and is completed in TWO parts. Part one is completed online and comprises scale 8 only. Part two contains scales 1-7 and is completed as a hard copy.
It is important to point out that this leadership scale identifies things we would expect an experienced principal to consistently demonstrate. There is no expectation that you, as a new principal, will meet all of these at a high level.
We are setting a high standard because we want to signal the types of leadership practices that will help you to become an excellent principal.
Part One is a questionnaire about the effectiveness of aspects of your leadership

- After completing scales 1-7 what conclusions did your draw about the strengths and weaknesses of instructional leadership in your school?
- What priorities do you now have for the development of instructional leadership in your school?
-
Please retain a copy for yourself to use at your mentor’s first visit.
NOTE: Both parts of this survey ask you to rate the effectiveness of leadership across a series of effectiveness indicators. For each indicator you respond by choosing ‘ineffective’, ‘minimally effective’, ‘satisfactorily effective’, ‘highly effective’, or ‘outstandingly effective’.
